Access to Water Meter Pits is Not Allowed
Only City of Harrington employees are allowed to open a water meter pit. Even homeowners and plumbers may not open a water meter pit. No one is allowed to turn the water on or off at the meter or disturb a water meter in any way. If the water must be turned off at the meter, please contact City Hall at 398-3530 during normal business hours or call 632-8827 for an after hours emergency (a service fee applies).
The City of Harrington urges all homeowners to find any existing shut off valve for water lines inside of their house or have a master shut off valve installed if there isn’t one already. Shut off valves allow the homeowner to quickly turn off the flow of water in the case of broken water lines and it is also an easy way to check for leaks after a repair. This saves water, water damage, city staff time, and service fees.
If there is a plumber at your house doing other work, it is an excellent time to ask for a master shut off valve to be installed at minimal cost. Please remember to contact City Hall at 398-3530 to have the water to your house turned off at the meter.
Not sure if you have a master shut off valve already? Check out this article about finding it.
