Women Spies during the Civil War

Thursday, September 22nd @ 6:00 pm—Presented by Thomas J Ryan, Author of “Essays on Delaware during the Civil War” and “Spies, Scouts, and Secrets in the Gettysburg Campaign.” The Civil War changed the role of women when over three million men went off to war. Women were left behind to maintain the home and farm, serve as war relief workers, nurses, factory workers, clerks, school teachers, secret soldiers, and vivandieres. Many also served as spies for both North and South. While some of these women were successful spies, often their lives took a turn for the worse. This presentation will examine the triumphs and tragedies of these who risked their lives for a cause they held dear.
